The level cap is an interesting thing in MMOs, especially new ones. The sooner you get there, the less there typically is to do. Usually all of the content is designed around either cooperative or competitive group play, and without other players, it makes it a little harder to do! Star Wars: The Old Republic has been out well over a month now, and many players are beginning to reach the level cap of 50. I wouldn’t say it’s anywhere close to “most” yet, but a good chunk of folks are getting there.
So, I’m curious to hear about what you, dear readers, are doing to whittle away your time in that galaxy far, far away. Some of you have been level 50 for quite a while, and some of you just arrived. So it will be interesting to hear the perspectives from both camps! So don’t just vote, discuss below!

Good day, TORWarriors! Recently our own Mark Douville wrote an article about players racing to the level cap and today I’d like to present the other side of this debate. The general feeling is that players that reach level cap within weeks (or months in some cases) are “content whores”, “rushers”, “content locusts“, or even [...]

More and more people have reached the current peak of Star Wars: The Old Republic – level 50. I recently wrote about those people who felt the need to get to level 50 within days of starting the game. Today we have another perspective on the matter. Isabelle Parsley of MMORPG.com writes a nice article [...]

The first major update has dropped on Star Wars: The Old Republic. With it comes bug fixes and game adjustments. But of course what everyone looks forward to is the new content. This patch, unsurprisingly, brings a new Flashpoint, a massively expanded Operation, and updates to Ilum – all of which are made for level [...]

Perhaps you took part in one of last night’s launch festivities and were all excited to race home, boot up and start your marathon play session in The Old Republic? Maybe snag a world or possibly server first? Well, you can scratch ” first to level cap” off of your list – the race is over. Star Wars: The Old Republic is only officially launching today, but there are already some level 50 characters running around!
While it’s easy to judge these folks and accuse them of skipping story and not “enjoying” the game, enjoyment is a very personal thing. Those who do this in fact derive enjoyment from it. Wether it’s the thrill of the race or the bragging rights at the finish line, folks do this in MMOs for myriad of reasons.
On the other hand, it’s a little disheartening that, before the game even officially went live, there were max level characters. I personally don’t like the idea of head start programs (although I understand the logistical benefits) because it doesn’t give everyone the same level playing field on which to start. As they say, don’t hate the player, hate the game.
Has this happened in any other major MMO (max level character on the day of launch)? Did it take longer or did it come sooner than you thought it would? Should BioWare tune it differently? Everyone’s play style is different, so it would be hard to compare apples-to-apples when judging whether or not this was “too fast”, but let us know your thoughts!
