Video: The Future of TGN SWTOR

If you’re a fan of Star Wars: The Old Republic, then there is almost no doubt that you’ve seen the videos made by TGN SWTOR.  They’ve been active in the community since the very early days, making news shows, creating walk throughs, publishing PvP videos, posting PvE demos, and generally cranking out lots of video content for the SWTOR fan.  It’s all been very high quality stuff, and TGN SWTOR has been a major boon to the SWTOR community overall.

B-Run giving us the scoop on the future of TGN SWTOR

Now TGN SWTOR is evolving.  They’ve got a new head honcho in Blockade Runner (affectionately known as B-Run), and they’re upping the ante.  The TGN SWTOR channel will be featuring more PvP videos, more podcasts, and a newly restyled news show.  Of course, that news show will feature a new partnership with a top-notch news site devoted to SWTOR.  We’re not saying who the partner site is, of course, because that would be a big secret.  ;)   We can say, however, that we’re really looking forward to the newly evolved TGN SWTOR channel, and what they’ll be bringing to the community.

So here’s they’re new intro video, in which B-Run talks about plans for TGN SWTOR, the future, and what’s to come.  Watch and enjoy, friends!

James Ohlen: “Update 1.2 Coming In the Next Week”

Published by under News & Info,Stories From Elsewhere,updates , Apr 07 2012

While PAX East hasn’t exactly been a very newsy event for SWTOR fans, we have gotten a few tidbits of information out the convention. Of course, one of the more interesting stories involves the appearance of the April 10th announcement for Update 1.2 on the main SWTOR.com site. This was later revealed to be nothing more than a “text error” by BioWare’s Joveth Gonzalez.

Look out, James! There's a Sith Lord behind you!

Well, to add to the mix now is a statement by James Ohlen that “We have our Update 1.2 coming in the next week.”  This was said during the MMORPG.com panel discussion at PAX yesterday afternoon. The question “Why are we excited about your game?” was asked of the panel, and Ohlen’s answer included the following:

You’re going to see so many changes and additions to the Star Wars Universe. It’s going to be impressive. We have our Update 1.2 coming in the next week and then after that it’s going to continue to roll out month after month. It’s exciting.

To some, Ohlen’s statement may indicate a return to that April 10th date. However, given the strong denials by BioWare, that seems unlikely.  In addition, this could be interpreted a number of ways.  It could mean that the patch will be available for download next week, with the official launch of Update 1.2 very possibly going live the week of the 17th.  While this is a bit of speculation on our part, it does fit all the facts we know so far. ;)

Legacy Update 1.2: Endgame Crafting And Space Missions

Hello again TORWarriors!  In skipping along through the daisies (aka internet) I happened upon an excellent read at one of my favorite sites.

"I think you put the thingamajig over here." "No no no, you keep saying that, but you're going to break it. It goes here." KABLAM!!!!!!!

If you’re into any kind of healing at all, then you’re aware of Dulfy’s Healing Corner.  Well good ‘ol Dulfy has posted something new and interesting that I think you’ll all be happy to read, a complete list of materials and the ways to obtain them in Legacy Update 1.2.

Hey everyone! Patch 1.2 has finally made a lot of the endgame exotic crafting materials (Alien Data Cube, Biometric Crystal Alloy, Self-Perpetuating Power Cell and Rakata Energy Node) tradeable and also added an entirely new list  of crafting materials (Molecular Stabilizer, Synthetic Energy Matrix, Baradium Flux). What is neat is that you can also obtain these materials via methods other than raiding, like doing space missions!

Dulfy goes on to link the cubes, nodes, alloys and power cells that make up grade 7 and 8 crafting materials, Space Mission mats and much more.  The whole article is extremely detailed and full of win, so please head over and give it a good read to prepare yourself for your future healing adventures in Legacy Update 1.2.

It’s a Tough Job: Helping Suicidal Gamers

Today, I read an Escapist article that both terrified and horrified me. The article started with this statement: “CCP [the developer of Eve Online] is investigating an Eve Online FanFest panel for sharing a severely depressed player’s contact info, then encouraging others to harass him until he killed himself.”

It went on to describe how the presenter, who is part of the CSM council that officially represents player interests to CCP, allegedly showed copies of the suicidal player’s depressed comments from in game and gave out in-game contact information in the presentation. He then apparently suggested fellow gamers harass this player until he did go forward to commit suicide.

What did members of the audience do? They laughed. Not one person had the courage to stand up in that convention room and call out this presenter on his shocking, despicable comments.

If you or a friend are thinking about suicide, call this number, 911, or your local emergency number immediately. Don't delay! (1)

The Hard Reality of Suicide

According to the World Health Organization, approximately one million people take their own lives every year. Another 20 million attempt suicide and are thankfully not successful. It is more common in those with depression and those who have problems with alcohol. The chances are good that you actually have met someone who is or has been suicidal at some point in their lives. If you are a guild officer or guild leader, you may very well have to deal with one of your guild mates confiding in you that they are thinking of taking their own lives. Do NOT take this lightly. You may be their lifeline.

I have had a couple of online friends who became suicidal. It was an extraordinarily emotional and difficult experience for all of us, and I’m going to share one of my experiences with you. I hope it will help you if you ever encounter a similar situation.

Recognizing Suicidal Thinking

The first step for you as a guild member is to recognize the signs of suicidal thinking. People who commit suicide don’t typically do so in a vacuum. Often they talk about death, a particularly painful event they’re experiencing, or have a tremendous feeling of hopelessness. Here is a helpful list of some signs.

Talking about suicide Any talk about suicide, dying, or self-harm, such as “I wish I hadn’t been born,” “If I see you again…,” and “I’d be better off dead.”
Seeking out lethal means Seeking access to guns, pills, knives, or other objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.
Preoccupation with death Unusual focus on death, dying, or violence. Writing poems or stories about death.
No hope for the future Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and being trapped (“There’s no way out”). Belief that things will never get better or change.
Self-loathing, self-hatred Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, shame, and self-hatred. Feeling like a burden (“Everyone would be better off without me”).
Getting affairs in order Making out a will. Giving away prized possessions. Making arrangements for family members.
Saying goodbye Unusual or unexpected visits or calls to family and friends. Saying goodbye to people as if they won’t be seen again.
Withdrawing from others Withdrawing from friends and family. Increasing social isolation. Desire to be left alone.
Self-destructive behavior Increased alcohol or drug use, reckless driving, unsafe sex. Taking unnecessary risks as if they have a “death wish.”
Sudden sense of calm A sudden sense of calm and happiness after being extremely depressed can mean that the person has made a decision to commit suicide.

A Call for Help

A few years back, one of my online friends, who I’ll call ‘Mark’ to protect his privacy, broke up with his fiancee. He adored her, and the breakup crushed him. I saw the warning signs when Mark said things in our group chat like “I don’t think anyone would attend my funeral” and “I can’t live without her.” All of us in that group tried to be encouraging and offered what help we could.

Then, on Thanksgiving Day, he came online to our group chat and said one word. “Goodbye.”

My heart hit the pit of my stomach. I KNEW something was very, very wrong. The three of us who were online then tried to reach him in chat to see if he was OK. One person mentioned having Mark’s cell phone number. I asked him to send a text message.  He was scared, and wasn’t sure what to do. Being scared, by the way, is entirely normal. He gave me Mark’s phone number.  I sent a text asking him if he was OK.

I got a chilling reply. “The gun jammed, so I took all my pills.”

While gulping deep breaths to try to slow down my racing heart, I immediately dialed 911, and said “You’re going to think this is really strange, because I live about 800 miles away from my friend, but he just told me he’s trying to kill himself.”  The dispatcher was extremely professional and took the information that I had–Mark’s cell phone number, the text message which I forwarded to them, and what had been going on the last couple of weeks with him. In the meantime, I typed to my friends in chat what was happening, hands trembling. We scrambled to get all the information we could find to help the police locate him–his facebook profile, his IP and ISP information from our forum, every little tidbit we could think of. Mark’s life was literally in the hands of three online friends and the police department. I was 800 miles away, and I felt utterly powerless.

About half an hour later, a police sergeant called me to let me know they had found Mark’s house. The information we had given the police had helped them quickly narrow down his real name and address. Within minutes, they had sent several squad cars out.  About 20 minutes after that, he called me again to let me know the paramedics had gotten to him in time, they were taking him to the hospital, and they thought he was going to be OK. I let our chat group know Mark was going to make it. Then, I sobbed on my husband’s shoulder in sheer relief.

Mark had to spend several days in the hospital and is now doing better. I emailed the police department commending them for finding my friend so quickly and working so professionally with me.

What To Do If You Think Someone May Be Suicidal

If any of your guild members shows the signs of suicide, please don’t be passive about it. Talk to that person. Respect their feelings, but don’t ignore the signs. What they are feeling is very real to them, even if it does not always make sense to the rest of us. If you recognize some of the suicide signs listed above in either yourself or a friend, please know there is help for you. In the US, you can call 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or go to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website (click here). In the United Kingdom, you can find help at Samaritans.org (click here).  The hotline in the UK is 08457 90 90 90, and in the Republic of Ireland it is 1850 60 90 90. For those outside the US or UK, the Befrienders.org website (click here) has a list of suicide lifeline phone numbers for many countries.

Sometimes, people will say things in the in-game general chat that may trigger your alarm bells to go off about that person having possible suicidal tendencies. Please bring that to BioWare’s attention immediately so that they can take steps to get that person help. To do that, click the big question mark at the top of your screen. A window will pop up. At the bottom right of that window is a button that says ‘create ticket’. Click that.

To create a ticket, click the question mark on the top navigation bar, select the 'request help' tab at the bottom, then click 'create ticket'.

Another window will pop up. Select ‘general/other’ from the drop down list. In the description, put “Emergency: Possible suicide attempt”. Put the person’s in game name, the server, the time, and as much detail as you can about what was said. BioWare has account information, so they can get help to that person very quickly. Don’t be afraid about ‘bothering’ BioWare with this. They are there to help. They would much rather have you contact them and determine nothing was wrong than have everyone ignore the signs and discover later that someone died as a result. You will never be ‘bothering’ anyone by reporting it. Don’t leave it to someone else, either. It’s better for BioWare to get multiple reports on this than none at all.

Select the 'general' category in the drop down list, put the information in the description, and click 'create ticket'.

If you help someone who has made a suicide attempt, recognize that is an extremely stressful and difficult event for you, too. This is especially true if that person dies. Don’t be afraid to get help for yourself to be able to handle it effectively.

Whatever you choose to do to help, do something. If it’s a false alarm, great! That person won’t die!  You also gave that person information he or she might need in the future. If it really is a serious attempt, you may very well be the difference in that person living and dying.

Blizzard: Drop in WoW Subs likely due to SWTOR

Gamasutra has a new post up pointing to some words said recently by senior World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave during an interview with Eurogamer. In the interview they discuss the decreasing WoW subscription numbers and other future prospects of the behemoth MMO title. In news that probably came as a complete shock to few, Mr. Lagrave admitted that BioWare’s Star Wars:  The Old Republic is at least “attributable” to WoW’s declining subs.

Let us discuss the numbers…

WoW’s last subscriber count set the game at approximately 10.3 million subscriptions, certainly no number to scoff at, but when they were looking at 11.1 million subscriptions just three months prior to that – it raises some eyebrows. In contrast, SWTOR’s last subscription numbers were sitting at around 1.7 million as of last month, with over 2 million copies of the game sold.

Lagrave had no specific numbers available for this loss of players, but had some words on the matter:

“Of course people are trying Star Wars — our development team are trying Star Wars! I’m one of the few people who’s still playing it actually, but yeah we’ve seen a dip in subs. It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, it’s also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria [WoW expansion pack due for release later this year], so it’s not surprising.”

If you missed it, you can check out the full interview at Eurogamer over here. While it’s certainly true SWTOR players are probably detracting from some WoW subs, the game is also over 7 years old and is naturally going to suffer from declining subs. What say you, TORWarriors? Do you think SWTOR is having any major impact on WoW subs? Drop a line, let us know what you think!

The Two Shall Become One: Ask a Jedi Joins Forces with TORWars!

Today is both a sad and a happy day here at TORWars. Our good friends over at Ask a Jedi have decided that it’s time to close up shop. This is truly sad news, in that AAJ has been a major part of the SWTOR community for more than two years. Their daily news updates, their editorials, and the high quality of their reporting was something that fans relied on each and every day. I know that, personally, I visited AAJ multiple times a day simply because of their insights into SWTOR, and the overall excellent quality of their work.

Ask A Jedi – an epic community for SWTOR fans!

But here’s the happy part: while AAJ isn’t going to continue in it’s current form, it will carry on right here on TORWars. This is less of a closure, and more of a merger. Some of the AAJ staff will be porting over and writing for TORWars, including the ever popular Lady Republic (Jennifer Davis), and the Emperor of Ask a Jedi himself, Bill “Lethality” Leonard. Our hope is that our combined efforts will make bringing SWTOR fans the very latest news, opinion, information, and editorials even better than before.

I have to say that, personally, I’m going to miss Ask a Jedi. Bill is a personal friend of mine, and not only have I enjoyed AAJ as a SWTOR fan site, and Deirdre and I have enjoyed hanging out with Bill at the various conventions (Fan Site Summits, E3, PAX, etc). Many happy memories were made over steaks and beer. There is nothing in the world like bonding over food, liquor, some very geeky Star Wars talk, and all the laughs we’ve had over the past couple of years.

There is a post over at AAJ in which Bill himself shares his personal thoughts on this changeover, on mind-melding with TORWars, and on a wide range of other topics. And don’t forget to leave a comment – there’s a nice, full comment thread, growing ever longer by the minute, in which AAJ fans share their sentiments with Bill and the AAJ staff. Drop by and drop them a line, will ya?

And for Bill, Jenn, and everyone on the AAJ staff – you are very welcome here at TORWars. We are happy to have you. There’s plenty of room here at TORWars Orbital Command. Once you settle into your new quarters and find a place to put all your lightsabers, blasters, thermal detonators, home-built protocol droids, and other whatnot,  we’re confident that you’ll feel right at home. ;)
