This week, Yellow Posts will be lighter as their has been little activity from BioWare since last week. Calm before the storm, hopefully?
With the use of the cover mechanic for the Imperial Agent and Smuggler, people are wondering how it will work for their respective Advanced Classes. Georg’s post highlights the different ways cover will work with the classes, and how one can specialize for it, or for something else and only use cover minimally:
All Smugglers have access to cover, but depending on Advanced Class and Skill set, cover plays a less or more important role for your gameplay.
A Gunslinger with lots of points in the Sniper tree will have made cover a core part of their combat routine, with abilities like ‘Entrench’ and ‘Cover Pulse’ improving the utility and protection their cover ability offers, while utilizing several ‘cover only’ abilities for heavy frontloaded damage. There’s some interesting dynamics in this kind of setup as well, such as a skill that makes your next Snipe instant after rolling to cover…
A Scoundrel on the other hand will have fewer abilities that modify their cover mechanic and can be played in a way that does not rely on cover very much or at all. Their Stealth Field generator allows them to approach targets unseen and they have a decent arsenal of close to mid range scatter gun abilities and melee moves to round out their blaster capabilities.
Unlike the previously described Sniper (who values a very deliberate, planned approach to combat), the scattergun specced Scoundrel is much more about getting deep into the action, guns blazing…
Reading too much into messages, wether on the forums or even from Twitter, can lead to disappointment. This is exactly the case, as Stephen tweeted that he was “PLANNING”. As predicted, the community went into a buzz about the message, trying to think of what it could possibly be. Stephen said that the planning for E3 was basicaly done, and that his tweet was actually about the San Diego Comic-Con:
You all do, I don’t think you need a special representative.
Trust you guys to read a bit too much into the odd random tweet, but I will say that particular ALL CAPS outburst was mostly motivated by how much planning we have to do right now. Have you seen ourEvents page recently?
Today’s PLANNING was actually about San Diego Comic-Con. E3′s mostly done. Mostly. It’s never all done until the doors open.
For the lucky few attending E3, you should make your way to the South Hall of the convention center. The EA booth will be right inside the doors, which will mean lines for TOR will be going out of those doors as well. For those that do not know, BioWare runs under the EA banner when attending conventions. David made clear that BioWare will be at the EA booth and showing the game their, not in a meeting room as was the case in previous years:
I believe in prior years, we’ve always shown the game in a meeting room off of the show floor. This year at E3 we are on the EA booth, right at the front of the South Hall. The E3 website has a floor plan for those of you who’ll be there and want to know where you can find the crew.
To wrap up the weeks posts of interest, Damion made a post that simply answers a simple question. ”Will we be able to swap gear during combat?” For balance reasons along that would not make sense, and even in real combat scenarios, that does not hold weight. Damion gives a short reply saying gear jugling did not really add to the combat experience of the game. An interesting choice of words, which means it may have been considered at one point.
Right now, we do not allow players to change gear or weaponry in combat. We just didn’t think that kind of gear juggling added a lot to the combat.
That will wrap up Yellow Posts-Lite and developer posts for this week. Hopefully with E3 right around the corner we will get some details on what BioWare has planned for the show!
